Wicklow to Wexford

17th August
Wicklow to Wexford
Our full Irish breakfast was served in a lovely room with views to the harbour, and the coast of The Irish Sea. Drom Ard - the name of the B & B means high ridge or high back in gaelic. And it was aptly named. The room overlooked the gardens which were full of fuschias, wigellias and all sorts of other shrubs I didn't know so well. It was very colourful and a paradise for the birds.
We drove back into Wicklow but it was drizzling rain so we headed on the coast road towards Wexford. Brittas Bay was a ittle coast town - with a surfing school, not many houses but quite pretty. The next town was Arklow, then past Gorey. Camolin had some quaint little homes. We stopped at a village called Ferns. Behind the old church and grave yard stood the ruins of some old castle or maybe the original church. It was still raining so we just took a few photos and back into the car. We stopped next at Enniscorthy. This town was established in 510ad. It had some quaint old shops and high sloping narrow streets. We stopped at 'The Malthouse' for lunch. This was a huge hotel, pub, function centre set up in a relatively new building (1893) that had been the malting house. From there we took a walk to Castle Hill to see the castle. It was in reasonable condition seeing it was built in the 1200's but quite small compared with the ones we had seen in Germany. And so on to Wexford through Ballaghkeen. They are quite keen on names starting with Bally here - Ballygarrett, Ballyroebuck, Ballycarney even Ballyboggan!!!! Must find out what Bally is in gaelic.
So over the bridge and there we were in the middle of Wexford. Right hand turn and a few moments of confusion and we were on the road out to Ferrycarrig where our B & B for tonight is situated.
We were met by the cleaner - Monica from Romania. We have a lovely room. If you look out of the window in the right way you can catch a glimpes of the ruins of an old watch tower and also the ruins of a castle. We got settled and then went for a drive to see these two landmarks. Still pouring rain, so just a quick look and back to the B & B. Not much else to be done with weather like today but catch up on some rest and sort out the suitcase.
Next we set off back into Wexford town and found a nice restaurant 'Green Acres' and thought 'that's the place to be' and had a lovely meal. Back through the rain and home. Maybe tonight there will be something on the one station that is watchable, if not I might catch up on a bit of reading.
